What is the difference between i-ticket & e-ticket in Railways? How can I book my ticket through cash and my debit card?  

i-Ticket- It is like a normal ticket which will be delivered at your address. For i-Tickets you have to book the ticket at least two days in advance. i-Tickets are issued for Waiting List, Confirmed and RAC cases.

An e-ticket can be booked up to the time of chart preparation for your train. To book an e-ticket you have to enter your ID proof details like PAN Card, Voter’s ID Card, Passport, Ration Card, Central/State Govt. ID Card or Driving License. After booking just take a printout of the Electronic Reservation Slip and carry it during travel with the ID proof.

Payment Options

1. Payment by Credit Cards like Citibank Cards, Diners Club Cards, ICICI Bank Cards, American Express Cards. Agents can book through any Visa/Mater/Amex cards.
2. Payment through Direct Debit Facility – ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, IDBI, Citibank, Bank of Punjab, Oriental Bank of Commerce, UTI, State Bank of India, Centurion Bank of Punjab, Punjab National Bank, ABN-AMRO, Federal Bank, Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India, IndusInd Bank, ITZ Cash, State Bank of Travancore, Andhra Bank, Icash Card, Karnataka Bank, SBI debit card, HDFC Debit Card etc

the main diffrcence btween i-ticket & e- ticket is that , i-ticket is delevered at ur address & courrier charges are also charged . in e- ticket u can hv a printout of the ticket as u book. there is no option to book ticket by cash. rather the payment gateway provide no. of option of payments through various banks through debit cards, internet banking etc.

i- ticket is what you book on the Net but receive a the ticket physically at your given address while registering .

e - Ticket is when you book a ticket on net and you print a copy of the same which is as good as a ticket but have to show a verification id in the train to the TT for assuring him that you are the one who booked the ticket

you may use HDFC / AXIS / SBI / KVB (Karur Vysya Bank) VISA debit cards(only) for ticket booking through any of the Payment Gateways (ICICI PG, HDFC PG, CITI PG).

You can also use Cash Card in case you do not have credit or debit card for ticket booking, Cash Cards are available in the denomination of Rs.100, Rs.200, Rs.500 and Rs.1000 at many outlets and easily available.


You can not book ticket with cash on the website.

i-ticket :An i-ticket refers to the normal Internet ticket which will be delivered at your door step in 2-3 days .For i- ticket you have to book a ticket at least two days in advance to date of journey to ensure courier delivery. It can be booked in Confirmed/RAC /Waitlisted ticket.

e-ticket : An e-ticket can be booked up to the time of chart preparation for your train. This will require entering the identity particulars of one of the passengers, who will have to carry same ID card while traveling. An e-ticket can be booked only if the ticket status is Confirmed/RAC .No waitlisted ticket will be booked.

i-ticket is internet ticket and e-ticket is called electronic ticket both are booked over internet.

Now in i-ticket u book ticket on internet and railway department courier you the ticket as u get from railway counter.

In e-ticket u can take print out of internet page to use as your  ticket.

i-ticket need to book atleast 3 before boarding tarin.
But i-ticket u can book upto prepration of tarin chart.

U can book both on www.irctc.co.in, with credit or debit card.

in case of i-ticket, the ticket wil be delivered to your address by courier within 24 to 48 hours. in case of e-ticket, the ticket is to be printed by your at your home/office on plain paper and when carrying this ticket to board the train you need to have a government issued I-card along with this ticket....i ticket can be made for waitlisted where as e-ticket is only for confirm ticket

  1. Thank you for the post on difference between e-ticket and i-ticket. Using PNR we can easily take Railway ticket print out, if required.
